The Seven Wonders of Grandmotherhood Every Grandma Experiences

When you are a grandma, you find that there are some unique things that only you will experience, whether it be holding your child’s child for the first time or hearing the sweetest little voice say that they love you the most. Being a grandma is truly the greatest gift, which got me thinking: Which experiences are the most remarkable “wonders” of being a grandma?

While everyone’s experience and journey is different, there are some aspects that we all share and relate to, including:

1. Holding your grandchild for the first time

I already mentioned this in the intro, but it is so very special and life-changing that it merits its own description (and top billing on this list). Every mother remembers when her child was placed on her chest for the first time, and it seems as though that particular moment can never be topped. Somehow, holding your new grandchild is just as – if not more – special, as there is something incredibly unique about this bond that cannot be described or replicated.

2. Deja Vu

Is it just me, or has this special moment happened before? I experience deja vu A LOT more now that I am a grandma, as so many moments take me back to when my kids were little. It’s an enjoyable glimpse into the past that I never thought possible. (Seriously – who knew that grandkids would come with so many perks?)

3. Passing down generational traditions

Growing up, we always attended a Christmas Eve church service and followed that with a big family dinner that included extended family and ended with everyone opening their stockings. Guess how my family celebrates Christmas now? Yep, the same way (and it makes me tear up every single year). Witnessing your grandchild participate in family traditions, whatever they may be, gives a grandmother an immense sense of fulfillment that you won’t get anywhere else.

4. Sharing in their accomplishments

Seeing your grandchild hit milestones (walking, talking, etc.) or accomplish something big or small may be one the most rewarding things you will ever experience. Grandmas revel in their grandchildren’s success and feel a sense of accomplishment knowing that her love and support contributed to their growth. (It’s true – you are an integral part of these milestones and successes!)

5. Having that magic touch

What is it about a grandma that is just so warm and comforting? I can remember being soothed by my grandma’s lullabies and back rubs in her rocking chair, and I feel so humbled that I seem to have that same calming effect on my grandbabies. It’s a magical power that makes grandmas feel even more important.

6. Experiencing a newfound appreciation of the simple things

We live in an overly complex time, which makes our grandchildren and their unique worldview even more wonderful. Whether it’s your grandchild holding your hand during a walk or making you a homemade gift, you will feel like your heart may burst out of your chest. These small, everyday expressions of love and affection are beautiful moments of connection that are priceless.

7. Feeling unconditional love at all times

You know that you’re loved by your family and friends, but you don’t feel it quite as intensely as you with your grandkids. Yes, they tell you they love you (and it is the absolute greatest thing ever!), but you can just feel it more with them, whether or not they are saying it out loud.

Conclusion

How many of these “wonders” have you felt for yourself? I pray that you know the feeling of all of the above (and then some)! Let me know which other universal feelings you would add – I always love to hear from you, my fellow Devoted Grandmas.
