If you want to build your bond with your grandchild and build their confidence, there is nothing better than an affirmation that makes them feel seen and loved.

Defined as “emotional support or encouragement,” affirmations are short and sweet sayings that can significantly impact your grandchildren now and in the future. To get you started, here are 15 simple yet powerful affirmations that are guaranteed to make your grandchildren feel loved and confident:

1. You have the power to make a positive impact on the world

We can all stand to hear this a little more. We may not think one person can change things, but all it takes is one little ripple to begin a widespread trajectory. Why can’t that person – or that ripple – be one of our grandchildren?

2. You have a special purpose in life

God put you here for a reason and knew the perfect time and place for each of us. How cool is that? Remind your grandchild of just how unique they are and that they have a special purpose.

3. You are worthy of respect and kindness

Tell your grandchildren this early and often so they know it isn’t acceptable to be treated poorly by friends or acquaintances or – later in life – co-workers, bosses, or partners. (Sharing this will also teach your grandchild that they should treat everyone with respect and kindness.)

4. You are never alone, even when you feel like it

God always has our back and will never forsake us. Remind your grandchildren of this so they know they are never alone.

5. You are blessed with many gifts and blessings

Just because your grandchild can’t do XYZ like their friend can doesn’t mean they don’t have their God-given gifts and blessings! If the affirmation isn’t enough on its own, you can highlight some of their skills and blessings as both a reminder and a way to build them up.

6. You are capable of forgiving others and yourself

People and situations will hurt us, but we must learn to forgive and move on, as holding a grudge will do nothing but harm us in the long run. Teach your grandchild this lesson and remind them that Jesus calls us to be forgiving and loving of others.

7. You have a bright and positive attitude that brings joy to others

Your grandchild is the greatest joy of your life, but they may not know they bring joy and positivity to others they encounter, too! Encourage your grandchildren to show their inner joy and happiness to everyone they meet. (Remember what I said earlier about the ripple effect? It applies here, too!)

8. You have a wonderful imagination that can take you to amazing places

Celebrate your grandchild’s imagination! Let them build, create, and play as much as they want, as they not only bring joy to those watching them, but their big imagination can unlock discovery and innovation.

9. You are never too old to try new things and pursue your passions

If you have a struggling adult grandchild, this may be just the reminder they need. Send them a text, make a quick call, or write a note – it may just be the words they need to hear to make a life-altering change.

10. You have a lot to be grateful for in your life

Comparison is the thief of joy, so this is an affirmation you can tell your grandkids now, and they can eventually say to themselves as they grow. (In this age of social media and YouTube, this is a reminder that we all need to hear every so often!)

11. You have the courage to stand up for what is right

Teach your grandchild to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves and to be a voice for those who cannot speak. If they see something, say something, as their courage can change or improve someone else’s life.

12. You are unique and special, just the way you are

Just as God put you in this time and place for a reason, He also gave you your personality, temperament, and voice. Don’t try to conform or be someone else – the world needs the unique and special YOU!

13. You have a big heart and a lot of love to give

There is no better feeling in the world than receiving a big hug or compliment from your grandchild. Throw in a special gift or art project, and you feel you are on top of the world. Tell your grandchild that they have a big and beautiful heart and can spread that love to everyone they encounter.

14. You have a wonderful sense of humor that can brighten anyone’s day

Is it just me, or do few people have any sense of humor today? The world needs to smile more, and your grandchild may be just the person to turn those frowns upside down.

15. You have a creative mind that can come up with amazing ideas

Children may be the most creative humans there are. Cherish your grandchild’s creativity and encourage them always to use their creative side, regardless of age.

There you have it: Simple yet powerful affirmations that will make your grandchild feel loved and confident! Just as they are the essential part of your life, you are one of their most critical parts, making you the perfect person to build them up.

(Oh, and before I forget, you, grandma, are lovely, brilliant, and beautiful inside and out!) Let’s talk again soon.
