14 Innovative Ways To Impress Your Teenage Grandkids

January 29, 2024

Teenagers are a mystery… One day, they feel strongly about one thing, and the next day? Not so much. They can be moody, sassy, and sometimes act like they don’t have brains in their heads, but do you know what? I wouldn’t change mine for a thing!

I remember being a teenager and how difficult it was to navigate hormones and life, so I try to cut my teenage grands a break as much as I can. Does this mean leaving them alone and hoping they someday emerge from this stage? Not exactly… Instead, I try to impress them in fun and innovative ways, including:

1. Embrace technology

Yes, I know this is obvious, but it is still worth noting since technology plays a huge role in teens’ lives! You can show off your skills with the latest gadgets, apps, or social media platforms and surprise them by sending trendy GIFs or using popular hashtags correctly. Coolest grandma ever? You know it! 😛

2. Learn their lingo

For our generation, it was Greaser, party pooper, and wet rag. In this generation, it’s dank, ghosting, and boujee. Is there a learning curve? Yes, but it isn’t anything you can’t handle! (To help you along, I even made you this handy guide.)

3. Play video games

This one pains me to say (and do, if I am being honest), but there is nothing more remarkable than a grandma who “slays” at Fortnite. Remember, even if you’re not good at it, your effort to engage in their interests is a win.

4. Cook a trendy recipe together

You have at least heard of TikTok, but did you know that the trendy video app offers some useful things occasionally? One of these things is recipes, so grab your grandbaby and try your hands at cloud bread or a unique fusion dish.

5. Discuss current events

Yes, dear – Your Devoted Grandma knows a thing or two about the goings on in the world, so let’s chat about current events, politics, or whatever interests you! (Let’s just hope you and I agree on politics, hehe.)

6. Yes Day

I know I sound like a broken record, but don’t knock a “Yes Day” until you try it! Speaking of sounding like a broken record…

7. Know their love language

…I have received comments before about love languages being psycho-babble, but there really is something to knowing how the person you love feels loved! Think about it: What makes you feel the most loved? Is it when someone gives you a huge hug? Gives you a thoughtful gift? Spends quality time doing something you love? This same premise pertains to our grandbabies!

8. Stay fit and active

If you want to impress your teenage grand and their friends, go on a jog with them or show off your yoga moves. Hey, you’re only as old as you feel!

9. Plan an adventurous outing

Who says adventure is only for the young? Plan something exciting that’s out of the ordinary, whether it’s a day trip to a new city, a hike in a beautiful national park, or even a thrilling escape room challenge. Let this be a teachable moment: Age doesn’t define our ability to seek and enjoy adventures.

10. Have a modern sense of style

You don’t have to dress like a teenager to be stylish! Simply find a modern, chic look that’s comfortable and makes you feel great, even if it’s just a trendy accessory or a fashionable pair of shoes.

11. Be open-minded about music

Nicki Who? Doja What? The stuff these kids listen to today sure isn’t as deep as the Beatles’ lyrics, but you should still try to appreciate the music they love (or at least pretend). You don’t have to be a fan of every new band or artist they adore, but showing an interest, or even attending a concert with them (earplugs in tow), can be a bonding experience.

12. Support their dreams

Whether they aspire to be an artist, a scientist, or an entrepreneur, show your genuine interest and support. You can do this by attending their events, celebrating their successes, and encouraging them when they face setbacks. Your belief in them is invaluable, Grandma!

13. Be funny and witty

A good sense of humor goes a long way, so share jokes and funny anecdotes from your youth (trust me, they love hearing about our ‘primitive’ times), or just be playful in your interactions.

14. Stay positive and upbeat

Last but certainly not least, maintain a youthful, optimistic outlook on life. This doesn’t mean ignoring life’s challenges but showing that you can face them with a positive attitude. Believe me when I say it’s inspiring and can help them develop a similar outlook.

Conclusion

Let me guess: You already do most of these things, don’t you? Keep doing them, my friend! You make this Grandma thing look so easy. 🙂 God bless, and let’s talk again soon! <3
