You’re cool, Grandma!

You know it, I know it… but do your grandkids realize it? I’m kidding, of course, as they know no one is better than their special gram. However, if you are like me, you may still need help keeping up with the hottest new trends, especially concerning our teenage grandkids.

To combat this, I have compiled this piece chock-full of the latest trends and how you can partake – without losing yourself along the way!

Navigating the Digital Landscape

Grandma keeping up with technology

When I was young, the closest thing to ‘social media’ was the neighborhood gossip that used to fly faster than a frisbee at the park. Today, the kids are all about Instagram, TikTok, and something called “Discord” (which I still don’t really understand, but I digress).

First off, don’t be scared of these platforms. They’re just ways for people to connect, share ideas, and sometimes, even bake virtual bread (I still prefer my real oven, thank you). Oh, and embrace the memes, AKA those funny pictures with captions that you see all over Facebook. Yes, they can be confusing. But remember when we first learned to read music notes or crochet patterns? It’s the same thing – just a different language.

Change can be scary, but don’t worry if you mix up things, as that’s where the laughs come from. If you mix up a “dab” with a “dank meme”, your grandkids will laugh for hours and make you the center of their next viral video. Trust me, I’ve been there. 😛

Grandma listening to music with headphones

If you thought navigating digital platforms was a wild ride, hold onto your hats because the music scene is a whole new rollercoaster. Who knew that Billie Eilish wasn’t a new brand of tea?

But remember when we used to bop to The Beatles, Elvis, and The Rolling Stones? Music is just an expression of the times. Ask your grandkids to share their favorite songs with you. You might find your foot tapping along to Lil Nas X or BTS. (I’m not making these up, they are actual musicians – or so the kids say, ha!)

And don’t even get me started on the shows these kids are watching these days. Squid Game? Stranger Things? It sounds like a seaside carnival on steroids. But hey, if you can survive Days of Our Lives, you can handle anything.

Hip, trendy grandmother

Ah, fashion. One minute, bell bottoms are in, and the next, they’re out. Then, just when you’ve donated all your flared trousers, they’re back in style.

The trick here is to look for trends that resonate with you. Trust me, nothing turns heads at the supermarket faster than a 70-year-old rocking a pair of mom jeans with a chunky “statement” necklace made out of old Scrabble tiles.

And when it comes to DIY fashion, why not enlist your grandkids’ help? They’ll jump at the chance to revamp your wardrobe, and you’ll get some quality bonding time. Remember, just because it’s fashionable, doesn’t mean it can’t be comfortable. Elastic waists are a godsend, my friends.

Now, here’s the real pearl of wisdom I want to share: it’s all about balance. Our grandkids are growing up in a world where trends change faster than our hair color. It’s important for them to learn to appreciate what’s new and exciting but also to stay true to themselves.

So, while we’re exploring these trends, let’s teach them the value of individuality. Let’s show them that trends come and go, but being comfortable in your own skin (wrinkles and all) is what really counts.

In the end, the coolest thing we can be is ourselves – unique, authentic, and a little bit out of touch with teenage trends. After all, who else is going to teach them to make the perfect cup of tea or the secret to a killer crossword puzzle? Remember, we’re not just grandmas – we’re trendsetters in our own right.

Conclusion

There you have it, my fellow cool grandmas. We may not always understand the lingo – or why those jeans have to have so many holes in them – but that doesn’t mean we can’t embrace the spirit of the trends and have fun with it. Remember, you’re not just keeping up with the trends, you’re sharing an experience with your grandkids. It’s about connection, laughter, and creating memories that will last a lifetime (or at least until the next meme comes along).
