“In Case I’m Not Here” – A Grandma’s Dream For Her Grandchildren’s Future

Disclaimer: Devoted Grandma is reader-supported. If you purchase anything through my site, I may receive a small commission (at no cost to you). It helps keep the site alive, so thank you.

When you become a grandma, your life changes overnight, and you become a new (and, dare I say, better) person who would walk to the ends of the earth to protect your grandchild.

With this overwhelming love comes hopes and dreams for your grandchild and their future. While I am not planning on going anywhere soon (and expect for you, too, to stick around!), I know there is a possibility that I won’t be here to see my grandchild’s later years, which is why I wrote this letter filled with all my dreams and prayers for my precious grandbaby.

Grandchild,

I was born many, many years ago and have experienced many, many things in my life.

An education.

A wonderful marriage.

Faith.

Motherhood.

Travel.

While all of this is good, and I consider my life to have been filled with blessing after blessing, I find your birth and my new title as "grandma" to be my greatest miracle and my time with you to be the most fulfilling. My cup runneth over because of you, and I pray that you grow up to feel just as charmed and blessed.

I'm not planning on going anywhere anytime soon (don't worry about that!), but in case I'm not here, I want to make sure you know my hopes, dreams, and prayers for you and your future.

In case I'm not here, I want you to know you are never alone.
You have a family who adores you.
Faith and family are pillars, but friends are also a beautiful part of life,
So choose ones that build you up and cheer you on behind your back.

In case I'm not here, I want you to know you are worthy.
You are worthy of respect.
You are worthy of happiness.
You are worthy of love.
People in this world want to tear down others, and while I pray you never have to deal with such a person, you may.
As the old saying goes, "hurt people hurt people," but nobody's circumstances allow them the right to treat others poorly.
Keep these people at a distance.

In case I'm not here, I hope you have a long and fulfilling life.
We all have a calling, whether marriage and raising a family, religious life, or working and seeing the world.
Whatever it is that God calls you to do, I pray that it brings you an immense amount of peace, joy, and satisfaction.
Life is short, but it is beautiful and oh-so-grand, and I hope you, too, may enjoy every bit of it.

In case I'm not here, remember to drink eight glasses of water daily, chew every bite of food 20 times, and get at least 7 hours of sleep each night.
Okay, I know this isn't always practical or doable, but promise me you will take care of yourself, as being physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy is the key to a longer and happier life.

In case I'm not here, know that I am always in your heart.
You may not be able to see me, but I am there.
If you feel no one is proud, know I always cheer you on.
If you feel you have failed, know that you have not, as every day is a new beginning.
If you feel tired or weary, know that I am wrapping my arms around you, even if you cannot feel it.
If you feel you are not loved, always remember what I said earlier, as you are loved beyond measure.

You are loved.

You are smart.

You are good.

You are my dream come true.

I love you.

As I said in the intro, I am not planning on going anywhere anytime soon, but I don’t want to risk not telling my grandchildren what they mean to me. If you get a second, I highly recommend that all of you, my grandma friends, do the same. As always, let’s talk again soon!
