Letter writing is a lost art which is a darn shame. Do you remember when you were a kid and how exciting it was to receive mail or how grown up you felt to write, address, stamp, and mail a letter? Kids today just don’t understand!
Since receiving mail was an exciting part of my childhood, I want to do the same for my grandkids, so I try to send cards, care packages, and letters regularly.
Would you like to begin this tradition but need to figure out what to write? Or are you just looking for some fresh ideas?
While a greeting card works just fine, I like to turn my mail into a keepsake that I like to think my grandkids will keep and cherish forever. If you are just getting started (or need new topics and inspiration), I present to you my ideas of 6 heartwarming letter ideas for your grandkids:

1. Grandma’s life before you
Before you were a grandma, you were a mom, a wife, and even a little girl – share this with your grandkids! Tell them what you were like at their age, what you liked to do, what toys you played with, your favorite foods, and anything else you would like to share! Your grandchildren will get a kick out of seeing a different side to their grandma (and may even be a little shocked to hear that their grandma was once their age).
Another approach is to write down your feelings about how much your life changed when they were born. Not only will this convey their importance to you, but it is also an excellent writing exercise for grandma!
2. A list of your favorite things about your grandchild
Who doesn’t like hearing about the things people like about you? Whether it’s their laugh, integrity, or how good they are at a sport, when you write this list, your grandchild will feel seen and loved even more by you, their special grandma.
3. A simple “I am thinking of you” note
Letters don’t have to be long and drawn out – sometimes a simple “I love you, I am proud of you, and I am thinking of you” can go a long way.
If you have a gift for the visual arts and/or crafting, I encourage you to include it in your letter. Whether it’s a landscape you drew with oil pastels or just a doodle of grandma and grandchild, your grand will feel loved (and impressed) with this beautiful mail. (Another cute and crafty idea is to cut hearts out of paper to put in the envelope – you can even decorate the hearts if you feel extra artsy!)
4. Draw pictures or include some art
If you have a gift for the visual arts and/or crafting, I encourage you to include it in your letter. Whether it’s a landscape you drew with oil pastels or just a doodle of grandma and grandchild, your grand will feel loved (and impressed) with this beautiful mail. 5. Make a list of random facts about yourself and ask them to respond to you with their answers to the same questions
What’s the best vacation you have ever taken? If you could be any book character, who would it be? If you could take your grandchild anywhere, where would it be and why? Send a list like this to your grand and ask them to respond with their answers to the same questions.
For this one, you will want to hit the Dollar Tree for shipping supplies, as you will write about your favorite hobby and share it with your grandchild! If you love knitting, include beginner’s instructions, yarn, and knitting needles. Do you have a green thumb? Pick up some seeds and a little plastic hand trowel. If art is your thing, include a pad of artist’s paper, drawing prompts, and some kind of medium for them to use.
In addition to the supplies, you will want to include a letter that gets them started and tells about why you enjoy this hobby (and why you think they will, too).
There you have it: 6 simple yet heartwarming letter ideas for your grandkids! If you follow any of these prompts – or just any kind of letter – you are guaranteed to put a smile on their sweet little face. Have fun, grandma!
