This colorful craft makes for a fun afternoon of creating and also doubles as funky decor, making for a grandma-grandchild activity that cannot be beaten! Are you ready to get your craft on? Here is everything you need to create lovely woven woolen wall hangings with your older grandkids:

Supplies

  • Wool yarn
  • Weaving loom
  • Weaving needle
  • Scissors
  • Dowel rod or stick
  • Roving wool
  • Comb or fork
  • Tapestry needle

1. Set up your loom

If your loom isn’t pre-warped, start by stringing it with a neutral yarn to create the base for your weaving.

2. Choose your colors

Select a color palette for your wall hanging. This could be a mix of neutral tones for a minimalist look or bright colors for something more vibrant.

3. Begin weaving

Tie your chosen yarn onto the base string and start weaving using the weaving needle. You can use basic over-and-under weaving to start. (Be sure to leave a little slack in each row to prevent the sides from pulling in.)

4. Add texture and patterns

Experiment with different weaving techniques like looping, braiding, or adding roving wool for texture. Remember, you can create patterns and shapes depending on your comfort level.

5. Keep the weave tight

Use a comb or fork to push down each row of yarn as you go, which ensures a tight and even weave.

6. Finishing your piece

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail once you’ve reached the desired size. By leaving a tail, you can weave back into your piece with a tapestry needle.

7. Remove from the loom

Carefully cut the base strings at the top of your loom and tie them onto the dowel rod or stick. For the bottom strings, you can either tie them off or let them hang loose as a fringe.

8. Display your work

Find the perfect spot in your home to hang your new woolen wall art, or give it as a gift to someone special.

Conclusion

What do you think? Fun, right?!

Each piece you create will be unique, filled with the stories and memories made during its creation. So gather your supplies, set up your loom, and let your imagination lead the way to beautiful, cozy creations.
