If you are a longtime reader of Devoted Grandma, you know I love time capsules and highly recommend that grandmas make them with their grandkids! Time capsules – a “container storing a selection of objects chosen as being typical of the present time” – are an excellent way to freeze time and create memories, as you can pack away essential items and mementos that you revisit later.

If you still need to make a time capsule – or if you have but are looking to expand upon it – I have several tips and ideas to get you started!

Why a Time Capsule?

Time capsule contents

I believe there is something magical about curating a collection of items that commemorate the here and now – especially when it pertains to our grandkids and how they are in this fleeting moment of time. The point of a time capsule is not just what you find in the future but also the experience of choosing, preparing, and preserving the objects of the present. It also presents a unique opportunity for your grandkids to discuss the past, consider the future, and, most importantly, cherish the present.

Suggested Items for Time Capsules

The content of your time capsule should be a representation of the bond you share with your grandchild, so it will vary from family to family. Here are some generic suggestions that will hopefully spark some ideas and inspiration:

  1. A letter from Grandma: Write a letter to your grandchild, sharing your thoughts, feelings, wisdom, and hopes for them. Not only will it be something to add to the capsule, but it will be a unique keepsake in their adult life. (While you’re at it, why not ask your grandkids to write a letter to their future selves, too?)
  2. Grandchild’s Artwork: Include drawings or crafts made by your grandchild, which serve as a beautiful snapshot of their creativity at this age.
  3. Photos: Add pictures of the two of you together, as photos capture memories and feelings like nothing else can.
  4. Family Recipe: Include a handwritten family recipe that you’ve shared together. Since they will be much older when they revisit the capsule, you can even include other family recipes that you wish to pass down.
  5. Favorite Book or Song: Add a copy of their favorite book or the lyrics of their favorite song. This will recall the tastes and preferences of their childhood.
  6. Newspaper Clippings: These can give them a glimpse of the world events when the time capsule was created.
  7. Shared Tokens: Maybe there’s a small toy, a ticket from a movie you watched together, or a seashell from a beach day. Any (or all) of these can capture a memory the two of you share!

How to Create, Seal, and Store Your Time Capsule

  1. Choose Your Container: It needs to be durable and, ideally, water and air-tight. A stainless steel container or a heavy-duty plastic box can work well, and you can also consider commercially available time capsule containers.
  2. Prepare the Items: Place all items in the capsule. To protect photos, letters, and other paper items, consider laminating them or placing them in acid-free sleeves to prevent any mold or decay.
  3. Seal the Time Capsule: If it’s not a specially designed capsule, you might want to use silicone sealant to ensure it’s air and water-tight.
  4. Choose a Storage Location: You could bury it in your backyard, but be sure to mark the spot well, so it’s not forgotten or accidentally unearthed. Alternatively, you can store it in an attic, basement, or a safe deposit box, away from extreme temperature or humidity.
  5. Set a Date: Decide on an opening date and write it clearly on the outside of the capsule. It could be a significant date in the future, such as a milestone birthday or a particular year.

Conclusion

I know that I share a lot of activities that you can do with your grandkids (I try to share one a day!), but this may just be my favorite, as it is one that freezes a special moment in time. As always, I hope (and truly believe) this is something you and your grandkids will enjoy.
