Have you ever dreamed of setting sail with your grandkids on a quest to discover the vast oceans and the wonders they hold? Me, too! We want to give the world to these precious children, but finances, time, and practicality often get in the way. Should this shatter our dreams? Of course not! It just means we need to get creative.

If you want to treat your grandkids to an exciting under-the-sea adventure, start by planning a sea-sational journey that takes place right in the comfort of your own living room:

1. Plan your adventure

Kids playing pirates outside

Before you begin your adventure, ask your grands what they would like to do. Are we swimming with dolphins or discovering hidden treasure with a band of merry pirates? Are we explorers charting the depths or marine biologists cataloging new species? This is our day – we make the rules!

2. Create your marine paradise

Before you can begin your adventure, you will want to transform your living room into a deep-sea wonderland or the deck of an exploring ship. Blue tablecloths, paper fish, a ship’s wheel – anything to create a marine environment that will light up your grandkids’ eyes!

3. Dress for the high seas

Will everyday wear work for your aquatic adventure? Of course not! You and the grands should don your best marine outfits, whether it be elegant mermaids, gnarly sea captains, or cute little clownfish. (You’re the captain, Grandma, so you may want to invest in a fancy captain’s hat, hehe.)

4. Nautical nibbles

Aquatic-themed cupcakes

Hey, a crew’s gotta eat! Whip up some sea-themed treats that will satisfy their little bellies, a la ‘crab’ sandwiches, ‘oyster’ cookies, and/or the classic fish and chips.

5. Under-the-sea activities

No adventure is complete without some fun-filled activities, whether it be a craft session where you build your coral reef or a treasure hunt around the house. How about a captivating documentary about sea creatures? The possibilities with this one are endless!

6. Learn about the sea

Amidst all the fun, we’ve got a golden opportunity to teach our grandkids about the ocean’s wonders and why we need to protect them. (After all, isn’t every Grandma a teacher at heart?) The easiest and most engaging way to do this is by reading books or watching YouTube videos about the ocean.

7. Capture the memories

I know I sound like a broken record, but capturing these priceless memories is so very important, so be sure to have your phone or camera handy to freeze these moments. (If their parents aren’t there, they, too, will be happy that you snapped some pictures to share.)
