Capture the Moment with a Fun and Silly Family Photoshoot

Do you ever wish you could freeze time to make a special moment last even longer? We know from experience with our kids that children don’t keep, but it seems like time flies even faster with this next generation! To help prolong these golden days with my grandkids, I have started taking even more pictures and took the experience up a notch with fun and silly family photoshoots.

Why a photoshoot? Taking photobooth-inspired pictures is a low-key way to bring out everyone’s personalities, especially when paired with silly costumes and props. All of the above is incredibly simple to pull off and makes for a fun family night (and, later, an adorable scrapbook):

How to have a silly family photoshoot at home

Setting up a DIY photo booth at home is a quick and easy project that will bring fun and laughter to your living space and capture precious moments with those equally precious grands. Here are the steps I have taken to set one up in my home:

1. Choose Your Space

Look for a space in your home to set up the photo booth. It could be a living room corner, an empty wall, or even a section of your backyard. You want to make sure you have ample room for people to strike a pose and that there’s a power source nearby if you’re planning on using electronic equipment.

2. Design Your Backdrop

This is where your (and your grandkids’) creativity can truly shine! Think about the theme you want for your photo booth. Is it for a specific event like a birthday party or a whimsical addition to your everyday life? Once you’ve decided, it’s time to gather your materials.

If you’re after a minimalistic look, a simple, brightly colored fabric hung from the ceiling or a curtain rod can work wonders. Consider props like paper flowers, balloons, streamers, or even fairy lights for a more elaborate setup. Don’t be afraid to get creative and make it truly personal.

3. Lighting is Key

Even the most gorgeous backdrop won’t save poorly lit photos. Natural light is always the best, but if you can’t manage that, consider getting a lamp or two. You can use clip-on selfie ring lights or, for a more professional look, photography umbrella lights. Remember, the goal is to eliminate shadows and evenly light the faces of the people in your photos.

4. Say Cheese!

Now for the camera. If you have a DSLR or a mirrorless camera, that’s great! But if not, a smartphone with a good-quality camera will work just fine. You could use a tripod to keep your camera steady and at the right height. Consider getting a remote shutter or using the self-timer function to make the process smoother.

5. Fun Props

This is where the fun really starts! Gather a collection of props for your guests to pose with. Think oversized glasses, funny hats, feather boas, chalkboard signs, or anything else that takes your fancy. You could match them with your theme or use various quirky items. Remember: The sillier, the better!

6. Comfortable Seating

Since your photo booth will be used by people of different heights (a la kids and adults), consider having some adjustable seating or even some cushions available to ensure everyone can fit in the frame perfectly.

7. Test It Out

Before the main event or your day-to-day life with a new photo booth begins, take a few test shots. This will help you adjust the lighting, camera angle, or any other element that might need a tweak.

Note: If all else fails and you need help with any aspect of this, do what I do and consult your teenage grandchild or techie adult child.
