Reading aloud to your grandkids is incredibly important and beneficial, but do you want to know why I like it the most? It gives us a chance to cuddle up by the fire (weather permitting!) with a warm blanket and beverage. Do you want to make this already cozy activity even – well, cozier? Pair it with an autumn-themed book!

To get you started, here are 15 of my favorite autumn picture books that are perfect for reading aloud this time of year:

1. “Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn” by Kenard Pak

When you open this book, you’ll feel like you’re taking a stroll with a little girl through a world that’s saying a slow, gentle goodbye to summer and a soft hello to autumn. The pages burst with warm colors, reminding both you and your grand(s) of that sweet transition when the world gets a bit more golden.

2. “Fletcher and the Falling Leaves” by Julia Rawlinson, illustrated by Tiphanie Beeke

Ever felt a tad too attached? (Haven’t we all?) Meet Fletcher, the fox who’s not quite ready to let go of his tree’s beautiful leaves. This tale, complete with endearing illustrations, will have you both giggling and sighing as Fletcher discovers the beauty of change.

3. “There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves!” by Lucille Colandro, illustrated by Jared D. Lee

This may just be one of my favorite book series – have you read any of them? If you have, you should know that the old lady is at it again, and this time, she’s gobbling up all things autumn! Trust me, your grandkids will be in stitches trying to guess what she’ll swallow next, making it a fun read as the nights get longer.

4. “In November” by Cynthia Rylant, illustrated by Jill Kastner

If you ever wanted to wrap up the essence of November and gift it to someone, this book would be it. Through poetic words and heartwarming scenes, it beautifully paints a picture of what makes this month of gratitude and togetherness so special.

5. “The Scarecrow” by Beth Ferry, illustrated by The Fan Brothers

Nothing says ‘autumn feels’ quite like a story of a scarecrow and his adorable bird friend. Their tale of friendship is as heartwarming as that first sip of hot cocoa on a chilly day. And yes, maybe keep some tissues handy for those happy tears.

6. “Apple Cider Making Days” by Ann Purmell, illustrated by Joanne Friar

Dive into the rustic charm of autumn with this delightful journey through apple cider creation, where each page feels like a warm hug and reminds both young and old of the simple joys that come with the harvest season.

7. “Yellow Time” by Lauren Stringer

Picture this: a world painted in the most brilliant shade of yellow, where leaves dance like nature’s confetti. This book captures the magic of that brief, golden window in fall, making it an absolute joy to read out loud!

8. “Mouse’s First Fall” by Lauren Thompson, illustrated by Buket Erdogan

Follow the little mouse and his buddy Minka as they dive, play, and swirl among colorful fall leaves. Their innocent adventures are an adorable reminder of the playful moments that make autumn so memorable.

9. “Spookley the Square Pumpkin” by Joe Troiano, illustrated by Susan Banta

In a pumpkin patch where everything is round, Spookley stands out because he’s square. Often teased by the other pumpkins, Spookley feels left out and different. A heartwarming tale about embracing differences and the value of being unique, this book is not only perfect for the autumn season but carries a timeless message that resonates year-round. (Bonus? There is an adorable “Spookley” movie on Netflix that you can enjoy after reading the book!)

10. “Autumn is Here!” by Heidi Pross Gray

Celebrate the changing seasons with this charming story. The playful illustrations and rhyming verses follow the transformation from summer to autumn. Little fingers will love pointing out the vibrant colors and critters scampering around, and grandmas will adore the nostalgic feel of seasonal change.

11. “The Roll-Away Pumpkin” by Junia Wonders, illustrated by Daniela Volpari

On a crisp autumn morning, Marla’s pumpkin goes on an unexpected journey! A delightful chase ensues, involving a myriad of town folks who will leave your grandkids cheering and beaming.

12. “Leaf Man” by Lois Ehlert

As leaves start to fall, they take on a life of their own in this imaginative tale. Watch as the “Leaf Man” drifts over meadows, rivers, and more. The book’s die-cut pages and nature-inspired artwork will spark creativity, maybe even inspiring a little leaf art project post-reading!

13. “Awesome Autumn” by Bruce Goldstone

Autumn is awesome, isn’t it? Dive deep into everything autumn with this engaging book. From the science of the season to the joy of jump-worthy leaf piles, it’s a visual treat that is bursting with photographs, activities, and fun facts.

14. “Bella’s Fall Coat” by Lynn Plourde, illustrated by Susan Gal

Bella adores her autumn coat, but what happens when she outgrows it? This tender story about letting go and embracing change mirrors the transition of the seasons.

15. “A Tree for All Seasons” by Robin Bernard

Watch a tree transform as the year goes by in this captivating book with simple text and striking photographs that provide a close-up view of nature in all its glory. As autumn arrives, your grandkids will be enthralled by the tree’s golden crown and the secrets it shelters.

Conclusion

Whether it’s tales of playful pumpkins or the serene beauty of shifting seasons, this list has a book for every grandchild. Happy reading, and may every story make the bond of love even stronger!
