Summertime is synonymous with the Olympics and cheering on America as they race for the gold. Sadly, there are no Olympics this summer, but that doesn’t mean that you, Grandma, cannot host one for your grandkids!

Hosting a DIY Olympics is a fun and easy way to get the grandkids outside and keep them entertained this summer with engaging games that children of all ages will enjoy. Ready? Set? Let’s go!

Games and activities

Three-legged race

1. Egg and Spoon Race: Participants must balance an egg or a ping-pong ball on a spoon and race to the finish line.

2. Sack Race: Kids hop to the finish line while their legs are inside a sack or pillowcase.

3. Three-legged Race: In pairs, participants’ adjacent legs are tied together, and they race to the finish line.

4. Tug of War: Two teams compete to pull each other over a line.

5. Relay Race: Kids pass a baton to their teammates and run to the finish line.

6. Mini Javelin: Using soft pool noodles or lightweight sticks, kids throw their “javelin” the farthest.

7. Long Jump: Kids take a running start and jump as far as they can into a sandpit or onto the grass.

8. Water Balloon Toss: Partners throw a water balloon back and forth, stepping farther apart after each successful toss.

9. Obstacle Course: Set up an obstacle course using hula hoops, cones, pool noodles, etc.

10. Mini Shot Put: Kids throw a small rubber ball or a bean bag as far as they can.

11. Frisbee Throw: Participants aim to throw their frisbees as close to a target as possible.

12. Bean Bag Toss: Kids toss bean bags into different-sized containers for various points.

Instructions for organizing and hosting the event

Potato sack race

1. Planning: Choose a date, time, and location for your Mini-Olympics. (A local park, school field, or even a large backyard can work!)

2. Teams: Divide your grands into teams, each with a unique name and perhaps a color for identification. Make sure the teams are balanced in terms of age and abilities.

3. Supplies: Gather all the materials you’ll need for the games, a la spoons and eggs, sacks, ropes, pool noodles, sandpit, water balloons, hula hoops, cones, frisbees, bean bags, and containers.

4. Setting Up: Prepare the venue by marking out the areas for each game. You can even create a simple map to help kids know where each event is.

5. Rules and Safety: Explain the rules of each game and make sure that all participants understand them. Before they begin, you may even want to emphasize the importance of safety and good sportsmanship.

6. Order of Events: Organize the events in a sequence that allows for rest periods in between. (I like to start with less physically demanding games and gradually move to more active ones).

7. Supervision: Make sure there are adults or older children to supervise each game, ensure rules are followed, and prevent any injuries.

8. Refreshments: Keep lots of water and healthy snacks available for the children to recharge throughout the event!

Friendly competition and celebrating achievements

Olympic medals

1. Scorekeeping: Keep track of the points each team earns in every game, which can be done by an appointed scorekeeper.

2. Medal Ceremony: Have a medal ceremony at the end of the event. You can give out gold, silver, and bronze medals (or certificates) for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams or have medals for individual events.

3. Sportsmanship Award: Reward good sportsmanship with a special award. This can encourage kids to be supportive and respectful of each other.

4. Participation Certificates: Give each of your grandchildren a participation certificate to acknowledge their effort and involvement.

5. Photo Booth: Set up a photo booth with props related to each game. This can make the event more fun and memorable, and kids can take home a photo as a keepsake.

6. Celebratory Feast: Conclude the event with a feast or a picnic. This can even be a potluck where each family brings a dish to share.
