4 Helpful Money Saving Tips For Grandmas Like Us

Some of us know that living on a fixed income can be a challenge. But every single dollar saved here and there really adds up, and all it takes is being a bit more mindful about some everyday expenses. The video below has four (it says five, but call me crazy I only count four! 😂) money saving tips for seniors like us!

Traveling as a senior is really a point of emphasis here. There are several ways in which we can pocket a few extra dollars:

Anytime you’re going somewhere as a group or with someone else, ride together. Take turns doing this and reap the benefits!

Walk when possible

If healthy and your destination is close enough (and weather permitting), take the opportunity to get outside for a nice walk!

Public transportation

If your town has public transportation, use that to save on gas. Maybe you can even get rid of your vehicle altogether and eliminate your payment and insurance costs. And don’t forget Uber.

Senior Discounts

There are many senior discounts out there if you know where to look, and we touch on them here. But to summarize:

Don’t go anywhere without checking for a senior discount first. Trains, planes, cruises, you name it!

Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime earns you money back on goods purchased and saves you from going to the store. And seniors with a valid EBT Card and those who have Medicaid can qualify for even more savings.

Home improvement

Here’s one I wouldn’t have come up with on my own. Check with the Lowe’s, Home Depots, and Ace hardware stores in your area for some little known discounts.

Many popular retail stores offer senior discounts. Some of them only on certain days, and others 24/7.

If you didn’t know, you could most likely be saving up to 10-15% at your favorite restaurant. As long as you’re 60 years old or above (65 in some cases), you’re ready to start saving!

Health coverage

Don’t gloss over your healthcare coverage. Every year you can change your Medicare coverage during the Annual Enrollment Period of October 15th through December 7th.

Financial advisors

You can always seek out trusted professionals and try to lower interest rates, refinance your mortgage, etc. It never hurts to ask!

Some of these are more obvious than others, but like I said, it all adds up! Make a budget, stick to it, and don’t be afraid to ask for those discounts. 🙂
