As a devoted grandma, I’ve had the privilege of watching my grandchildren grow and thrive over the years. While I take great pride in the special bond we share, there are certain ways in which I’ve influenced them that I may not even be aware of myself. It’s a humbling realization, but one that has helped me become a more mindful and intentional grandparent.
Here are 5 things that both you and I, as grandmas, have likely influenced in our grandkids, even if we can’t see it ourselves:
1. Their Sense of Wonder
When I take the time to slow down and marvel at the simple joys of childhood with my grandchildren – whether it’s watching them discover a new insect in the backyard or listening to their imaginative stories – I know I’m instilling in them a deep sense of wonder and appreciation for the world around them. This awe-inspired perspective is a gift that can last a lifetime.
2. Their Emotional Resilience
Though I may not always see it, the way I model emotional awareness and coping strategies when faced with life’s challenges has likely had a profound impact on my grandchildren’s own emotional intelligence. By verbalizing my feelings and demonstrating healthy ways to process them, I’m equipping my grandkids with the tools they’ll need to navigate their own emotional landscapes.
3. Their Confidence and Self-Esteem
Every time I shower my grandchildren with unconditional love, celebrate their accomplishments, and remind them of their inherent worth, I’m helping to build their confidence and self-esteem. These positive reinforcements may seem small in the moment, but they can have a lasting impact on how my grandkids view themselves and their abilities.
4. Their Sense of Belonging
The traditions, rituals, and shared experiences I create with my grandchildren – whether it’s an annual family vacation, a weekly baking session, or simply the comfort of my presence – are likely instilling in them a deep sense of belonging and security within our family. These connections can provide a vital foundation as they navigate the complexities of growing up.
5. Their Compassion and Empathy
By encouraging my grandchildren to consider the perspectives of others, to show kindness and concern for their peers, and to find ways to make a positive difference in the world, I’m nurturing the development of their compassion and empathy. These qualities will serve them well as they grow into caring, socially-conscious individuals.
As I reflect on these influential aspects of my grandchildren’s lives, I’m reminded of the profound impact we grandparents can have, even in ways we may never fully comprehend. It’s a humbling yet empowering realization that encourages me to be even more mindful and intentional in my interactions with them.
Of course, I don’t take full credit for these positive qualities and characteristics. My grandchildren’s parents play the primary role in shaping them, and their own inherent personalities and life experiences also contribute greatly. But I like to think that, as a loving and supportive grandma, I’ve been able to amplify and reinforce these important qualities in my own unique way.
Moving forward, I’ll continue to cherish the special time I have with my grandchildren, knowing that even the smallest moments of connection, encouragement, and shared wonder can have a lasting impact. And while I may never fully see the extent of my influence, I’ll take comfort in the knowledge that I’m leaving an indelible mark on the lives of the little ones I hold so dear.
