As a grandma, I know that perseverance is an important life skill that can help my grandchildren succeed in all aspects of life.

Whether they’re learning a new hobby, studying for a test, or facing challenges in their personal lives, this handy quality can help them stay motivated and achieve their goals. What’s more, perseverance is a skill that can be developed with practice and guidance. In this list, I’m sharing some fun and practical ways that I can teach my grandchildren perseverance.

Grab a cup of tea, and let’s dive in!

1. Encourage problem-solving

Encourage your grandchildren to think critically about the challenges they encounter. When they face a problem, assist them in brainstorming possible solutions. Ask them to consider the pros and cons of each solution and evaluate which one might be the most effective.

2. Teach them to set goals

When your grandchildren set goals, inspire them to be specific and measurable. For example, if they want to improve their math skills, help them set a goal of completing a certain number of math problems each day or week. Teach them to break larger goals into smaller, more manageable steps to keep them motivated and track their progress.

3. Praise their efforts, not just their successes

When your grandchildren are working on a task, praise them for their hard work and effort. When you do this, they will begin to develop a growth mindset and understand that perseverance is more important than natural talent or intelligence. Cheer them on, grandma, even when they encounter setbacks or challenges.

4. Encourage them to keep trying

When your grandchildren face a setback, help them to see it as an opportunity to learn and grow. Show them how to reframe their mindset from one of defeat to one of curiosity and resilience. By doing this, you will show them that mistakes and failures are a normal part of the learning process and that they should not give up on their goals.

5. Be a role model

As a grandma, you can be a role model for your grandchildren by demonstrating perseverance in your own life. Share stories about challenges you’ve faced and how you overcame them. (You’re pretty inspirational, grandma – don’t forget it!)

6. Teach them to manage their emotions

When your grandchildren face a difficult task or challenge, talk to them about expressing their feelings and emotions. Teach them coping mechanisms, such as deep breathing or taking a break, to help them manage their emotions.

7. Provide opportunities for practice

Give your grandchildren opportunities to practice integrity and hard work in a safe and supportive environment. This could be through hobbies, sports, or academic pursuits. Challenge your grandkids to try new things and take on challenges outside of their comfort zone to build resilience and confidence.

8. Teach them to stay positive

When your grandchildren face challenges, help them see the positive aspects of the situation and to focus on what they can control, and find solutions to problems. Encourage them to maintain a positive attitude and to seek out support from family and friends when they need it.

9. Celebrate their successes

When your grandchildren achieve their goals, celebrate their successes with them. Acknowledge the hard work and effort they put in to reach their goal, which will give them a sense of pride and accomplishment.

10. Teach them the power of perseverance

Explain to your grandchildren the importance of perseverance in achieving success. Share stories of people who overcame challenges and adversity through persistence and hard work (including you!).

11. Foster a growth mindset

Teach your grandchildren to adopt a growth mindset, which is the belief that abilities can be developed through hard work and dedication. Show them how to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and learning, which will make them more resilient and persistent in the face of adversity.

12. Show them how to develop a plan

When your grandchildren face something difficult, assist them in developing a plan to tackle it. Teach them to break down larger tasks into smaller, more manageable steps, and show them how to prioritize and set deadlines.

13. Teach them to learn from failure

Teach your grandchildren that failure is a natural part of the learning process. Ask them to reflect on their mistakes and identify areas where they can improve.

14. Provide positive feedback

When your grandchildren are working on a task or project, provide positive feedback to keep them motivated. Be specific in your feedback and highlight their strengths and accomplishments.

15. Encourage collaboration

Encourage your grandchildren to collaborate with others when working on a task or project. This will help them develop teamwork skills and learn from others’ perspectives. Collaboration can also help them persevere in the face of challenges by providing a support system and fresh ideas.

16. Teach them to be patient

Perseverance requires patience, so teach your grandchildren to be patient when working towards their goals. Explain that progress takes time and that success is not always immediate. Have them focus on the process rather than the outcome and enjoy the journey toward their goals.

17. Model positive self-talk

As a grandma, you can model positive self-talk for your grandchildren by teaching them positive affirmations and focusing on their strengths and accomplishments. By doing this, you will help them develop a positive mindset and the resilience to overcome challenges.

I hope these tips have given you some inspiration for teaching perseverance to your own grandchildren. Remember, perseverance is not just about achieving success; it’s about developing resilience, grit, and a positive mindset.

Go out there and encourage your grandchildren to keep trying, stay positive, and never give up on their dreams!
