How A Grandma Can Turn Ordinary Moments Into Extraordinary Memories

July 24, 2023

Grandmas are magical. Think about it: We can turn the most seemingly mundane ingredients into mouthwatering meals and desserts, spoil non-stop, and never seem to run out of energy to keep up with our grands! How do we do it? Let’s say it helps to have the world’s cutest grandkids to dote on (hehe).

What other magical powers do grandmas have? We can turn ordinary moments into extraordinary memories! How do we do it? It’s easy, and here is how via these everyday scenarios:

1. Bedtime

Quite possibly the most despised moment of the day for children, bedtime can often turn into a fight and lead to more stress for everyone involved versus peace and relaxation. It doesn’t have to be this way, my fellow grandma! You have the power to make this time not only enjoyable but an experience they will remember fondly.

Instead of just reading to your grands, invite them to spin their own yarns. How? Imagine worlds where you both play the heroes, meet whimsical creatures, or discover secret castles. It’s not just about snuggling them under the covers but embarking on a magical journey into the land of dreams. Think of bedtime not as a mere end-of-day ritual but as a ticket to dreamland!

2. Arts and crafts

Arts and crafts with Grandma

Grandma’s house and arts and crafts go hand in hand, so it is essential always to have lots of paper, glue, and markers for little minds to create! While coloring with grandma is fun enough, you can still take this childhood favorite to the next level.

When it’s time for arts and crafts, it’s not just about painting or pasting but unearthing your little ones’ creative brilliance while telling tales and making keepsakes. You’re not just building a toy house, you’re constructing fairy kingdoms. You’re not just painting a tree, you’re recreating the Enchanted Forest. And it’s alright if we get messy – that’s part of the magic.

3. Cooking

Baking with Grandma

Is it enough for Grandma to make her famous spaghetti and meatballs or fried chicken for dinner? Of course, it is (trust me, they will never forget the smell and taste of each!) – however, we are talking about how to up the ante in terms of memories, so up the ante we shall!

The kitchen, dear grandma, is more than just a room for cooking – it’s the family’s hearth and heart. Turn your grandchild into a mini-chef, teaching them recipes passed down from our own grannies. Think of it like this: As you roll out the dough or stir the soup together, you blend in history, tradition, and much love.

4. Outdoor adventures

Who says that skipping to the park is merely that? Nonsense! It is an epic quest where you are searching for treasure or escaping a dragon who is only a few steps behind you. (If that sounds a little intense, you can adapt or change your story.)

Every outdoor activity is a new chapter in our adventure book. A walk in the park becomes a search for magical creatures. A night under the stars turns into a cosmic voyage. Equip your grandchild with a magnifying glass or a homemade telescope, and let their imagination run wild.

5. Storytime

Is there anything better than storytime with your grands? I always loved reading books to my kids and feel so blessed to do it again with THEIR children! (Seriously, where have the years gone?) While reading books is fun, creating stories with the kids may be even more enjoyable.

Transform storytime from a one-way street into a two-way adventure! Instead of simply reciting tales, invite your little ones to contribute. Could the prince in the story meet a unicorn? Is there a secret door under the princess’s bed? Add actions, expressions, and leave “clues” from the story around the house for added fun.

Conclusion

There you have it! Our magic trick to turning plain old moments into extraordinary memories is simple: We add a spoonful of imagination, a dash of creativity, and a whole lot of love into everything we do with our grandkids. Remember, in their eyes, we’re not just grandmas – we’re wizards, heroes, master chefs, artists, and explorers. So let’s don our magical caps and keep on making every moment with them truly extraordinary.
