As a grandma, we have a duty to our grandkids, including spoiling, loving unconditionally, and showing off their pictures whenever and wherever possible. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it. 😛 Grandmas are such important people, as we are one of our grandchildren’s first friends and confidantes, just like our grandmas were to us.

Not only do we love them beyond measure, but we, as grandmas, are also teachers who are constantly demonstrating life skills, as well as teaching timeless lessons like these 13 that every grandchild should know:

1. Kindness costs nothing but means everything

If there is anything the world needs more of, it is kindness, so teach your grands early to be kind to everyone they meet. Acknowledge how sometimes it can be challenging to be kind (especially if the person you are trying to be nice to isn’t the most pleasant person), but a simple gesture –  like a smile or a helping hand – can actually change the course of the recipient’s life.

2. Honesty is the best policy

As a recipient of my grandchild’s brutal honesty, I can attest to the fact that hearing the truth doesn’t always feel great. However, honesty is still important, as it builds trust and respect. That said, we can and should teach our grandkids to be honest BUT in a gentler and more understanding way.

3. Patience is a virtue for a reason

We live in a fast-paced world, and when we don’t get what we want instantly, we can quickly lose our patience. While the world shows no signs of slowing down, we must still teach our grandbabies to be patient. Whether waiting their turn or working hard towards a goal, patience always pays off.

4. A gracious heart is the best kind

Kids often do not realize if they are acting ungrateful, so teach them early to have a grateful heart and be thankful for the big, the little, and everything in between. After all, a heart full of gratitude is a happy heart.

5. Resilence makes for an easier life

While nobody wants to encounter a moment that calls for resiliency, it will occur, which is why it is a necessary trait to master early on. When they are old enough, you can begin teaching your grands that life won’t always be smooth sailing, which is why it is so important to be able to bounce back and learn from whatever challenges they may face.

6. You’re never too old to learn

School can be monotonous, but learning should always be fun (and does not have to always happen within the classroom walls). Foster a love for learning in your grandkids, whether it’s through books, nature, or new experiences. No matter your age, there’s always something amazing to learn!

7. Respect others and yourself

Teaching respect is fundamental, so show your grands how to treat others with dignity and kindness. On that same note, it’s also crucial to instill self-respect, so remind them that they are worthy and deserving of respect from others and themselves.

8. The value of hard work

Every time I turn on the news, I hear about another place closing down due to a lack of staffing… What is this world coming to? I believe in the value of hard work, so you better believe I teach my grandkids how important it is! Since hard work is the foundation of success, please encourage them to put in their best efforts in everything they do, whether schoolwork, sports, or hobbies. Remember, satisfaction and pride come from a job well done, not just the end result.

9. Diversity is beautiful

The world is made up of all kinds of people from different backgrounds and beliefs, and do you know what? That is a GOOD thing. (While I often wish everyone else thought like me, I realize that would quickly get boring!) Teach your grandkids to embrace and celebrate these differences, as understanding and appreciating diversity enriches lives and fosters empathy and inclusion.

10. Family always comes first

In a world that’s constantly changing, family remains a constant source of love and support. Family is everything, which is why we should strive to build and maintain our family bonds, be there for each other through thick and thin, and cherish the time spent together.

11. Laugh often

Life can be challenging, so it is vital to find humor in everyday situations and not take life too seriously. (Trust me – Life is too short to stress about every little thing.) You, my dear Grandma, can demonstrate that laughter is an excellent way to lighten life’s burdens and spread joy to those around them.

12. Dream big

Don’t confine yourself to a little box because you are scared – dream BIG and reach for the stars! Let your grandkids know early and often that it’s okay to have big dreams and aspirations. Not only should you talk the talk but walk the walk by supporting their ambitions and instilling in them the belief that they can achieve anything they set their mind to.

13. There is joy in giving

With a love language of gift-giving, I can attest that there is so much joy in giving your time, knowledge, and even the occasional surprise. The act of giving is one of the most rewarding experiences, so instill in them the joy of giving, not just in terms of material things, but in time, love, and kindness.

Conclusion

If I was a betting woman, I would wager that you already do most of these things with your grandbabies, so keep on keeping on, my fellow Devoted Grandma! Oh, and let’s talk again soon. 🙂
