Finding new and fun activities to do with my grandkids has been such a blast for me as a grandma. These options have not only kept us active but also brought us closer together and created wonderful memories. From relaxing nature walks to energetic indoor dance parties, there’s something for everyone, whether you’re an indoor person or an outdoors one. I’ll share some of our favorite activities that I think you and your grandkids will love trying. Let’s dive in!

Outdoors:

1. Nature Walks:

  • Description: Take a leisurely stroll in a nearby park or nature reserve, exploring the sights and sounds of nature.
  • Benefits: It’s a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the beauty of nature, get some gentle exercise, and spend quality time bonding with grandchildren.
  • Tips: Encourage everyone to observe and identify birds, flowers, and trees. Bring along a small notebook to jot down interesting discoveries or sketch what you see. Consider bringing binoculars for bird watching.

2. Balloon Volleyball:

  • Description: Play volleyball using a balloon as the ball, either indoors in a large room or outdoors in a spacious area.
  • Benefits: This activity improves hand-eye coordination and promotes laughter and light-hearted fun.
  • Tips: Adjust the size of the playing area based on available space. For indoor play, make sure fragile items are out of the way. To make it more challenging, add rules like hitting the balloon more than once before sending it back.

3. Gardening Session:

  • Description: Spend time together planting flowers or vegetables in a garden or pots on a balcony or patio.
  • Benefits: Gardening teaches valuable skills such as responsibility, patience, and nurturing. It fosters appreciation for nature and can lead to a sense of accomplishment when plants grow and bloom.
  • Tips: Choose plants that are suitable for your climate and easy to care for. Allow grandchildren to choose their favorite plants or flowers to plant. Explain the importance of watering, sunlight, and soil health as you work together.

Indoors:

4. Dance Party:

  • Description: Have a lively dance party in your living room with upbeat music that everyone enjoys.
  • Benefits: Dancing provides excellent cardiovascular exercise, boosts mood through music and movement, and strengthens the bond between grandparents and grandchildren.
  • Tips: Encourage creativity by letting each person choose their favorite songs or dance styles. Teach simple dance moves like the twist, the cha-cha slide, or freestyle dancing. Make it more festive by dimming the lights and using a disco ball or fun party lights.

5. Indoor Treasure Hunt:

  • Description: Hide treasures or clues around the house for grandchildren to find in a treasure hunt adventure.
  • Benefits: This activity encourages problem-solving, teamwork, and physical activity as they search throughout the house.
  • Tips: Write clues or draw maps to guide them from one clue to the next. Include small surprises or treats at each checkpoint to maintain excitement. For younger children, use pictures instead of words for clues. Make the final treasure something special, like a favorite snack or a small toy.

These activities are not only fun but also promote bonding, learning, and physical activity for both grandparents and grandchildren. Adjust the difficulty and complexity based on the ages and interests of everyone involved to ensure an enjoyable experience for all!
