Can you believe we’re already halfway through 2024? Time flies when you’re having fun (or chasing after grandkids)! I don’t know about you, but I had some big plans for this year. If you’re like most people, though, those New Year’s resolutions might be gathering a bit of dust.
Did you know that according to a study by the University of Scranton, only 8% of people actually achieve their New Year’s goals? But don’t worry – we’re not most people, are we? We’re wise, experienced, and ready to make the most of the time we have left this year.
Let’s take a moment to reflect on where we are and where we want to be. Remember that trip to the coast you wanted to take? Or that yoga class you meant to join? It’s not too late! In fact, July is the perfect time to reassess and recommit to our goals.
Here’s how we can make it happen:
Dust off those resolutions: If you made a list in January, find it. Take a moment to revisit your intentions. Reflect on what inspired you then and what inspires you now. If you didn’t make a list, no worries—starting now is just as powerful. Grab a notebook and jot down what you want to achieve by the end of the year.
Set realistic goals: While running a marathon might not be our speed this year, there are plenty of attainable goals waiting to be conquered. Consider activities like a daily walk in the neighborhood, joining a local yoga class, or even dedicating time each day to a favorite hobby. Choose goals that excite you and fit into your lifestyle.
Break it down: Those big dreams we have? They’re wonderful, but sometimes they can feel as daunting as cleaning out the attic! So here’s what we do – we break ’em down into bite-sized pieces, just like we do with our favorite recipes. Say you’ve been thinking about writing down all those stories you’ve been telling the grandkids. Sounds like a lot, doesn’t it? But here’s the trick: start small. Why not jot down just one memory each day, or even each week if that feels more doable? Maybe it’s about that first date with Grandpa or that time you got lost on vacation. Before you know it, you’ll have a whole collection of stories! The key is to make a little plan that works for you. Maybe you write a bit each morning with your coffee, or perhaps Sunday afternoons are your storytime. Whatever works best for you. Remember, slow and steady wins the race.
Find a buddy: Remember that friend you’ve been meaning to call? They could be the perfect accountability partner. Share your goals with them and encourage each other along the way. Schedule regular check-ins to discuss progress, share challenges, and celebrate successes together. Having someone to share the journey makes it more enjoyable and keeps us motivated.
Celebrate victories: Every achievement, no matter how small, deserves applause. Finished reading a book that’s been on your list? Mastered a new recipe? Let’s celebrate these wins—they’re proof of our dedication and perseverance. Treat yourself to something special, whether it’s a relaxing evening with a good book or a mini celebration with loved ones. Recognizing our achievements fuels our motivation to keep pushing forward.
Embrace new adventures: We’re not just about maintaining, we’re about thriving! Is there something you’ve always wanted to try? Whether it’s learning a new language, exploring a new hobby, or traveling to a new destination, let’s embrace the thrill of new adventures. Age is just a number, and curiosity knows no limits!
Stay flexible and adapt: if there’s one thing we know, it’s that life’s full of surprises – some sweet as pie, others a bit more sour. But here’s the secret: we’ve got to stay as flexible! When things don’t go quite as planned (and when do they ever?), let’s not fret. We can always adjust our recipe, so to speak.
Maybe that new hobby isn’t working out, or the grandkids are a handful on Tuesdays – it’s all okay. We’ll just shift gears and try something new. Remember, we’re aiming for progress, not perfection. As long as we’re moving forward, even if it’s just a small shuffle, we’re doing just fine. So let’s be kind to ourselves and keep on keeping on.
Nurture your well-being: Taking care of ourselves is key to enjoying life fully. Whether it’s through gentle exercises like yoga or tai chi, nourishing our bodies with wholesome meals, or practicing mindfulness and relaxation techniques, let’s prioritize our well-being. A healthy grandma is a happy grandma!
Implement the SMART Framework: Use the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) criteria to set and achieve our goals. It’s a nifty way to set goals that work for you. Instead of saying something vague like “I want to get healthier,” you get specific. Think more along the lines of “I’m gonna walk for 30 minutes every morning, five days a week, to boost my heart health by New Year’s Eve.”
See how that’s way clearer? It’s all about making your goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This way, you’re not just dreaming big – you’re mapping out a real plan that fits your life and what you care about. Plus, it’s so much easier to see how you’re doing and stay pumped up when you’ve got a clear target. Give it a try – you might be surprised at how much more you can achieve!
Remember, we’re not the sit-in-a-rocking-chair type of grandmas (unless it’s to read a good book). We’re vibrant, active, and ready to make the most of life. Whether it’s mastering that smartphone, starting a garden, or finally learning to salsa dance, there’s still plenty of time to make 2024 our year.
So, what do you say? Let’s grab this year by the horns and show everyone that age is just a number. After all, the best is yet to come!
What will you commit to for the rest of 2024? Whatever it is, I’m cheering you on!
