It obviously goes without saying but one of my greatest joys is spending time with my grandchildren. However, I’ve noticed that getting them to visit isn’t always as easy as I’d like. There are several challenges that can make it difficult for them to come over, but I’ve also found some wonderful solutions to make my home more inviting and to strengthen our bond.
One of the biggest hurdles is geographical distance. If my grandchildren live far away, the long travel times can be exhausting, and busy schedules make it hard to coordinate visits. There are also financial constraints to consider, as traveling can be expensive for their parents. Sometimes, health concerns come into play either for the children, their parents, or even myself making it unsafe or impractical to visit. And, of course, the demands of daily life, with school, extracurricular activities, and work commitments, can make finding the time to visit a real challenge.
On top of these logistical issues, there can be emotional and relational factors. Children might feel uncomfortable visiting if they see me as old or frail, and if there are any strained relationships between me and their parents, that can create additional tension. In today’s world, where technology often substitutes for in-person visits, it can be easy to rely on video calls instead of making the trip.
Despite these challenges, I’m determined to create a home where my grandchildren feel welcomed and excited to visit. I’ve made some changes that seem to be working well.
1. Create a Special Kid-Friendly Space
Over the years, I have transformed a part of my home into a space that’s just for my grandchildren. It’s filled with toys, books, and games that cater to their specific interests, whether that’s a cozy reading corner where we can snuggle up with a good book or a playroom where they can let their imaginations run wild. By giving them a dedicated space, I want them to feel like my home is their home too—a place where they can have fun, feel comfortable, and enjoy being themselves.
2. Keep Their Favorite Snacks on Hand
One of the simplest ways I’ve found to make my grandchildren feel loved is by keeping their favorite snacks stocked in the kitchen. Whether it’s cookies, fruit, or a special treat, having something they love to eat makes them feel special and cared for. It’s a small gesture, but it goes a long way in showing them that I’m thinking of them and that they’re important to me. Pro tip: next time your grandchildren are coming over, try texting them in advance to find out what food or snacks they would love to have during their visit.
3. Plan Enjoyable Activities
I always try to plan activities that I know my grandchildren will enjoy. Whether it’s baking cookies together, gardening in the backyard, or working on a simple craft project, having these activities ready to go makes our time together fun and memorable. I love seeing their faces light up when we bake their favorite cookies or create something with their hands. It’s a wonderful way to bond and create lasting memories.
4. Utilize Technology for Connection
While technology can sometimes feel like a barrier, I’ve found that it can also be a great way to connect with my grandchildren. I make sure to have a tablet or computer available with their favorite games, movies, or shows. We can enjoy these things together, whether it’s playing a game or watching a show they love. This also gives us a chance to talk about what they’re interested in, helping me stay connected to their world.
5. Display Photos and Artwork
To make my home feel even more welcoming, I’ve started displaying photos of my grandchildren around the house and hanging up any artwork they’ve made. Seeing their pictures and creations on the walls helps them feel like they’re a big part of my life and home. It also shows them that I cherish the time we spend together and that their achievements, no matter how small, are important to me.
6. Provide a Cozy Sleeping Space
I’ve made sure that when my grandchildren stay over, they have a cozy and comfortable place to sleep. Whether it’s a guest room with their favorite bedding or a fun sleeping area we create together, like a tent or fort in the living room, I want them to feel at ease and well-rested. A comfortable sleeping space ensures that they wake up refreshed and ready for another day of fun.
7. Engage in Their Interests
I make it a point to engage with my grandchildren in the things they love. Whether it’s playing their favorite video game, talking about their hobbies, or watching a TV show they’re excited about, I take an active interest in what they enjoy. This not only helps us bond but also shows them that I care about what’s important to them. It’s a great way to connect on a deeper level and create shared experiences.
8. Plan Special Outings
Planning special outings is another way I make our time together extra special. Whether it’s a trip to the zoo, a day at the park, or going to see a movie, these adventures give us something to look forward to. They also create opportunities for us to explore and learn together, making the visit feel like a mini-vacation. These outings are often the highlights of our time together and leave us with wonderful memories.
9. Create Traditions
I’ve found that creating traditions is a wonderful way to build lasting memories with my grandchildren. Whether it’s a weekly movie night, a special breakfast we always share, or a seasonal craft we do together, these traditions give them something to look forward to each time they visit. These rituals become part of our shared history and strengthen our bond over time.
10. Be Flexible and Understanding
I’ve learned the importance of being flexible and understanding when my grandchildren visit. Kids’ moods and preferences can change quickly, and by being patient and adaptable, I can ensure that their time with me is relaxed and enjoyable. Whether we need to change plans at the last minute or find a new activity to suit their mood, I’m always ready to go with the flow, making sure their visit is as stress-free and fun as possible.
By implementing these ideas, I’ve been able to create a home environment where my grandchildren feel happy, comfortable, and eager to spend time with me. It’s not always easy to get them to visit, but by focusing on what they enjoy and making my home a welcoming space, I’ve found that our time together is truly special.
