Grandma Advice: “I’ve Spent Years Focused on Family; What About Me?”

"Grandma Advice" is an ongoing advice column. All opinions and thoughts should be taken lightly, and you should always seek expert help when necessary. Thank you.

Dear Devoted Grandma,

Now that my grandkids are growing up and needing me less, I find myself with a lot more free time. The problem is, I've spent so many years being a mom and grandma that I've forgotten what I enjoy doing just for me. How can I rediscover my own passions and hobbies?

In Search of Myself,
Patricia from Texas

Dear Patricia,

Firstly, let me tell you that your sentiments are more common than you might think. As grandmas, we often pour so much of ourselves into our families that we forget we were individuals with interests, passions, and dreams long before we were matriarchs.

Finding yourself at this stage in life can be both exciting and a bit daunting. But the good news is that it’s never too late to explore new avenues or revisit old ones that brought you joy. Start by reflecting on the activities that used to light you up before family commitments took center stage. Did you enjoy painting, gardening, or perhaps dancing?

If you’re drawing a blank, that’s okay too! This is a fantastic opportunity to try something new. Ever thought about taking a cooking class or learning to play a musical instrument? How about volunteering for a cause that’s close to your heart? The possibilities are endless.

Remember, you don’t have to go it alone. Invite a friend to join you on this journey of self-discovery. Not only will it make the experience more enjoyable, but it also holds you accountable. You’ll be less likely to back out of a class or workshop if you’ve got a friend counting on you.

Patricia, take this newfound free time as a gift, an opportunity to focus on you. In rediscovering yourself, you’re not taking anything away from your role as a grandma or mom. In fact, you’re adding to it by becoming a richer, more fulfilled individual.

Wishing you a fulfilling journey filled with self-discovery
