These DIY Harvest Wind Chimes Are The Soundtrack Of Autumn

October 11, 2023

In the fall, temperatures are cooling, and breezes are more common (and oh-so welcome after a long and scorching summer). While the sound of a light wind can be beautiful enough, it becomes even more harmonic when paired with the rhythm of harvest wind chimes.

Though they are similar to regular wind chimes, I think that harvest wind chimes are even lovelier – especially when they are made with love by you and your grand(s)! Here is how (and why) you should make this homemade instrument this autumn:

Supplies

1. Gather and prep

Start by gathering your dried gourds or acorns. If using gourds, make sure they’re clean. Acorns should have their caps securely attached – If not, a dab of glue can fix them.

2. Painting (optional)

Before assembling, decide if you want to paint any of the gourds, acorns, or the horizontal piece. If you do paint, let it dry thoroughly before moving to the next step.

3. Drilling

Carefully drill a small hole through the top of each gourd or acorn. For the horizontal piece, drill evenly spaced holes along its length, as these are where your hanging elements will be tied.

4. Stringing

Cut string or fishing line into varying lengths. For each piece, thread one end through the hole of the gourd or acorn and secure with a knot. If you’re adding beads or bells, now’s the time to string them along before tying them to the horizontal piece.

5. Assembly

Tie each gourd or acorn string to the horizontal piece, ensuring they hang at different lengths for a varied visual and auditory effect. Once all are attached, cut two longer pieces of string, tying each end to the two ends of the horizontal piece. (This will allow you to hang the entire assembly.)

6. Final touches

Before hanging it up, give your wind chime a little test: Gently sway the horizontal piece to ensure all the gourds or acorns chime beautifully. Adjust as needed.

7. Display

Hang your Harvest Wind Chime on a porch, balcony, or even from a sturdy tree branch. Every breeze will now carry the gentle, musical reminder of the time you and your grandchild spent crafting together!

Conclusion

Harvest wind chimes not only capture the spirit of the fall season but create a melodic memory that’ll ring through the crisp air, reminding you of the precious time shared with your grandchild. Believe me: It is every bit as lovely as it sounds! Have fun, and let’s talk again soon.
