There was a young woman named Hannah who dreamed of opening her own bakery.
She spent years learning recipes, saving money, and practicing every chance she got.
Finally, the day came when she was ready to begin.
Excited but nervous, Hannah started asking people for advice.
Some encouraged her.
Others warned her it would be too difficult.
A few laughed and told her she wasn’t experienced enough.
One man in particular seemed very confident.
“You shouldn’t even try,” he said. “Businesses like yours almost never succeed.”
Hannah felt discouraged.
She nearly gave up.
A few days later, she visited her grandmother and shared everything she had heard.
Her grandmother walked to a bookshelf and brought back two old maps.
Both looked worn.
Both claimed to lead to the same destination.
“If you were lost,” her grandmother asked, “would you follow either of these maps without knowing who made them?”
Hannah shook her head.
“Of course not.”
“I’d want to know whether the person who drew the map actually knew the way.”
Her grandmother smiled.
“Exactly.”
She placed the maps back on the shelf.
“Advice is no different.”
“Some people speak from wisdom because they’ve walked the road before.”
“Others speak from fear because they never took the journey themselves.”
“And sadly, a few people speak from jealousy because they don’t want to see someone else succeed.”
Hannah thought quietly for a moment.
“So how do I know who to listen to?”
Her grandmother replied,
“Listen to people whose lives reflect the kind of person you hope to become.”
“Listen to those who encourage you while still telling you the truth.”
“And be careful with advice from people who enjoy pointing out why something can’t be done but have never tried doing it themselves.”
Those words changed everything.
Instead of listening to every opinion, Hannah became more selective.
She sought guidance from experienced bakers.
She learned from people who had made mistakes and grown from them.
When someone offered criticism, she asked herself,
“Is this meant to help me… or simply discourage me?”
A year later, Hannah opened her bakery.
It wasn’t perfect.
She still had plenty to learn.
But every day, new customers walked through the door.
One afternoon, the same man who had told her to quit stopped by.
“I never thought you’d actually make it,” he admitted.
Hannah smiled politely.
“I’m glad I didn’t let someone else’s fear become my future.”
Years later, Hannah often told young people,
“Be humble enough to seek advice.”
“But be wise enough to choose your teachers carefully.”
Because words are powerful.
The right advice can save you years of struggle.
The wrong advice can convince you to abandon a dream that was meant for you.
Not everyone who gives directions knows the way.
So before you follow someone’s advice, ask yourself one simple question:
“Is this person leading me toward my best future… or away from it?”
Sometimes, the wisest decision you can make is not just listening carefully…
But choosing carefully who you listen to. 💛
