There was a woman named Carla who valued clear communication. She believed in addressing things immediately, speaking her mind, and resolving issues quickly.

One afternoon, she received a short message from her friend Nina that felt cold and distant. No greeting. No warmth. Just a brief reply that seemed sharp and dismissive.

Carla felt hurt instantly.

Her mind began filling in the blanks.
Did I do something wrong?
Is she upset with me?
Why would she talk to me like that?

Without thinking, Carla started typing a long response, explaining her feelings, defending herself, and asking pointed questions.

Her fingers hovered over the send button.

Then she paused.

Something inside her whispered, Wait.

She set the phone down and decided to give it time. Maybe Nina was busy. Maybe she had misunderstood the tone. Maybe the story she was telling herself wasn’t the full picture.

Later that evening, Nina called.

“I’m so sorry if my message sounded off earlier,” she said quickly. “I was at the hospital with my sister and trying to respond between updates. I didn’t mean to sound short.”

Carla felt her chest soften.

The hurt she had felt earlier suddenly looked different. If she had sent the message she’d written, it might have created tension where none was intended.

Instead, her patience had left room for understanding.

That night, Carla realized how often we react to what we think something means rather than what is actually true.

From then on, she practiced pausing, asking questions before assuming, and waiting before reacting.

Because patience doesn’t delay resolution…
it protects relationships.

And sometimes, one small moment of waiting
can save us from a misunderstanding that never needed to exist. 💛
