The Fire He Didn’t Feed

There was a man named Victor who had a quick temper.

It didn’t take much. A small mistake, a delayed response, a careless word, and his frustration would rise instantly. His voice would sharpen, his patience would disappear, and by the time he calmed down, the damage was often already done.

He always told himself, That’s just how I am.

One afternoon, while working on an important task, something went wrong. A simple error caused a major delay, and Victor felt the familiar heat rising in his chest.

His hands tightened.
His thoughts raced.
The urge to react came quickly.

He opened his mouth to speak, ready to let his frustration out.

But then, something made him pause.

He remembered how things usually went.

The sharp words.
The regret afterward.
The tension lingered longer than the problem itself.

So this time, he did something different.

He took a breath.

Just one.

Then another.

He stepped back from the situation instead of stepping into it.

When he finally spoke, his voice was calmer than he expected.

“Let’s figure out what went wrong,” he said.

The room felt different.

No one became defensive.
No one shut down.
The problem was solved faster than it would have been if anger had taken over.

Later that day, Victor realized something important:

His anger hadn’t solved problems, it had made them harder.

But his calm response had done the opposite.

From that moment on, Victor practiced the pause.

Not perfectly. Not every time. But often enough to notice the difference.

Because staying calm isn’t about suppressing emotion…
It’s about choosing a response that leads to something better.

And sometimes, the strongest thing you can do…
is refuse to feed the fire. 💛
