The Day She Let Herself Rest

January 8, 2026

There was a woman named Naomi who held herself to very high standards. If she made a mistake, she replayed it endlessly. If she fell behind, she worked twice as hard to catch up. Rest felt like something she had to earn, and even then, she rarely allowed it.

Naomi believed that being hard on herself was the same as being disciplined. She told herself it was what kept her moving forward.

Until one day, it didn’t.

One quiet afternoon, Naomi sat at her desk staring at a list she couldn’t bring herself to finish. Her head ached. Her chest felt tight. For the first time, she wondered if the voice pushing her forward was actually holding her back.

That evening, she met a friend for a walk. After listening quietly, her friend said gently, “You talk to yourself in ways you’d never talk to anyone you love.”

The words landed heavier than Naomi expected.

Later that night, she stood in front of the mirror and tried something unfamiliar. She spoke kindly to herself.

“You did what you could today,” she said out loud. “And that’s enough.”

Nothing magical happened. Her problems didn’t vanish. Her to-do list didn’t shrink. But something softened inside her.

The next day, Naomi worked, but without punishment. She rested, without guilt. When she made a mistake, she corrected it without tearing herself down.

She realized that cutting herself some slack didn’t make her lazy or careless. It made her steady. It gave her room to breathe, learn, and grow.

Because grace isn’t the opposite of effort,
it’s the support that makes effort sustainable.

And sometimes, the most important kindness we can offer…
is to ourselves. 💛
