When our kids were young, we found it takes a village to raise them AND keep our sanity! Now that we are grandmas, I am learning something else: Being a grandma is a sisterhood, as we can all relate to one another in ways we never could before. I am so glad to share it with all of you, my fellow Devoted Grandmas!
Since we can relate to so many of the same things, I wanted to compile a list of 15 hilarious truths that we can somehow all relate to:
1. Invisible hearing aids
Who needs a doctor’s prescription for hearing aids when we grandmas and have built-in ones? Remember when we picked up on everything our kids said and did? Times have changed, as now we tend to have selective hearing when it comes to our precious grands, especially when they are a bit too noisy or when someone suggests it’s time to go home.
2. The bottomless purse
When my kids were little, they watched a show called “The Big Comfy Couch,” about a couch with infinite surprises hidden in the cushions. That is how I feel about my purse: It is vast and contains countless wonders and surprises! Tissues? Check. Candy? Double-check. A half-eaten cookie? Absolutely!
3. Time travel experts
We can tell stories from decades ago with vivid detail but can’t remember where we put our glasses five minutes ago… It’s funny how the mind works, but at least we can transport our grands to different times through our own stories and anecdotes.
4. Selective rule enforcement
Who says grandmas have to follow the rules? Let’s just say that at my house, the rulebook gets a little “flexible.” 😉 Bedtime becomes a loose concept, perfect for late-night storytelling or stargazing. And dessert before dinner? Well, that makes dinner taste better, doesn’t it?
5. Nicknames galore
Our names undergo a magical transformation once we become grandmas. Suddenly, we’re no longer just ‘Susan’ or ‘Barbara,’ but ‘Nanny Bubbles,’ ‘Granny Sunshine,’ or ‘MeeMaw Sparkles.’ And the best part? We answer to them all with equal delight!
6. Tech support comedy show
And the Oscar for best performance goes to… Us! Our grandkids may think of us as adorable tech novices, but little do they know, we’re often just playing along. Isn’t it hilarious watching their faces when we fix something on the iPad? Who’s tech-challenged now, eh?
7. Mysterious energy source
I have worked hard in my life, so I now get to enjoy kicking back often and napping every day. However, when the grandbabies arrive, I always feel revitalized, as if I have a hidden energy reserve just for them. We’re like sleepy cats that turn into playful kittens – we can run, jump, and play with the best of them until they leave, and we’re back to cat-napping.
8. The psychic network
You’ve heard of Spiderman and his tingling spidey senses, but have you heard of Grandma and her “grandma sense”? Silence in the house? That’s our cue to investigate. We might not be superheroes, but our grandma senses are pretty darn close!
9. Selective amnesia
Oh, the selective memory of grandparenthood… We conveniently forget the sleepless nights and tantrums of our parenting days and insist our children were little angels. (It’s our story, and we’re sticking to it!)
10. A snack cabinet wonderland
Who needs a candy store when you have grandma and her amazing snack cabinet? We have it all: Cookies, Goldfish, fruit snacks – what more could a kid want?
11. The story repeater
You’ve heard this story before? That’s fine – we just ask that you grin and bear it! Hehe.
12. Infinite patience (mostly)
I am reasonably patient, but my patience is virtually infinite regarding those sweet grandbabies. Well, almost… I mean, we will read the same book five times in a row, no problem. But let’s not test that patience in the supermarket queue – we’re grandmas, not saints!
13. Gourmet chefs for little tastebuds
We become culinary wizards for our grandkids. Picky eaters? No problem. We can create a feast of dinosaur-shaped sandwiches and princess-themed cupcakes in no time.
14. The art of exaggeration
In the world of grandparenting, a little scrape is a battle wound, and a cough is a call for chicken soup and extra cuddles. Exaggeration? Maybe. But in our eyes, it’s just an extra dose of care and love.
15. Memory lane tour guides
We’re like walking, talking history books, ready to whisk our grandkids away on a journey through time with our stories. After all, who needs a time machine when you’ve got Grandma’s tales?
Conclusion
How many of these 15 truths can you relate to? I feel as though everyone’s parenting is varied, but when we become grandmas, we seem to come together in many ways. Isn’t it wonderful? I am so glad you are here and that we are doing this together. <3 God bless!
