8 Times I Wish I Kept My Mouth Shut As A Grandma

May 20, 2024

Hey there, fellow grandmas! Let’s be real – as much as we love our role as the wise, doting matriarchs of the family, there are moments when we wish we could hit the rewind button and zip our lips. I’m sure you’ve been there, too! Here are 8 times I wish I kept my mouth shut as a grandma.

1. The Unsolicited Parenting Advice Incident

Remember that time when you casually mentioned to your daughter that she should try a different bedtime routine for your grandbaby? Yeah, that didn’t go over so well. The look on her face said it all: “Thanks, Mom, but I’ve got this.” Oops! Note to self: sometimes, it’s best to let the parents figure it out on their own.

2. The “Back in My Day” Blunder

We’ve all been guilty of this one. You start a sentence with “Back in my day…” and before you know it, you’re rambling about how things were so much better/harder/simpler when you were young. Meanwhile, your grandkids are rolling their eyes and secretly wondering if you rode a dinosaur to school. Time to retire that phrase, Grandma!

3. The Embarrassing Childhood Story Slip-Up

It seemed like a good idea at the time – sharing a funny story about your grandchild’s parent when they were little. But as soon as the words left your mouth, you realized you’d crossed a line. Now your grandkid is armed with ammunition for future sibling rivalries, and your adult child is shooting you death glares. Yikes!

4. The Unintentional Favoritism Faux Pas

You didn’t mean to play favorites, but somehow it slipped out: “You know, you’ve always been my special little angel.” Cue the awkward silence and the jealous looks from your other grandkids. Open mouth, insert foot.

5. The Accidentally Offensive Comment Catastrophe

You thought you were paying a compliment, but it came out all wrong. “Wow, you’ve really filled out since the last time I saw you!” Suddenly, your teenage granddaughter is in tears, and you’re scrambling to backpedal. Smooth move, Grandma.

6. The Unsolicited Relationship Advice Mishap

Your grandson confides in you about his latest romantic woes, and before you can stop yourself, you’re offering up pearls of wisdom from your own dating days. But as soon as you see the mortified look on his face, you realize that maybe your advice about “plenty of fish in the sea” wasn’t quite what he was looking for.

7. The Accidental Secret Spilling Snafu

Your granddaughter swore you to secrecy about her new tattoo, but it just slipped out over Sunday dinner. Now the whole family is in an uproar, and you’re getting the silent treatment from a very angry 20-something. Maybe it’s time to brush up on your secret-keeping skills, Grandma.

8. The Brutally Honest Opinion Overload

Your grandson proudly shows you his latest art project, and instead of just smiling and nodding, you launch into a detailed critique of his color choices and brush strokes. The crestfallen look on his face says it all – sometimes, it’s best to just stick with “Wow, that’s amazing!”

Oh, the joys and pitfalls of grandmahood! But you know what? Even with all the foot-in-mouth moments and accidentally hurt feelings, being a grandma is still the best gig in the world. So let’s all have a good laugh at our blunders and keep on loving our grandbabies with all our hearts (and maybe a little more tact).

Remember, fellow grandmas: sometimes, the wisest thing we can say is nothing at all. But when in doubt, just smother them with hugs and kisses – that always seems to do the trick!
