Include Your Grandkids In Thanksgiving Prep With These DIY Placemats

November 10, 2023

Do you remember when you were a kid and wanted to help whenever possible? While electronics have changed some kids’ attitudes, many children’s servant hearts remain, so don’t be afraid to delegate tasks to them! From cooking to light cleaning and setting the table, there are plenty of ways you can include your grandkids in Thanksgiving prep.

Another unique – and fun! – way to include your grandkids in the dinner preparation is to have them make DIY placemats for your guests! Here is what you need:

Supplies

1. Choose a theme or design

Discuss with your grandkids what kind of design they want, whether it be a collage of family photos, a drawing of the Thanksgiving dinner, a list of things they’re thankful for, or any other creative idea they might have.

2. Sketch or plan

Before using markers or glues, lightly sketch out the design on the craft paper or cardstock using a pencil to give an idea of where each element will go.

3. Decorate

Let the creativity flow! Use colored pencils, crayons, or markers to draw and color, and then add Thanksgiving-themed stickers, stamps, or stencils. If opting for a collage, cut out images or pictures from magazines and glue them onto the placemat in a desired pattern. If you like, you can even encourage your grandkids to write a special Thanksgiving message, a memorable quote, or a list of things they’re grateful for on their placemat.

4. Trim and add flair

If desired, use decorative edge scissors or craft punches to give the edges of the placemat a fun design.

5. Preserve your placemat

Once your design is complete and dry, cover both sides of the placemat with clear contact paper, pressing out any bubbles as you go. If you have a laminating machine, you can laminate them for added durability.

6. Set the table

Once your placemats are ready, lay them out on the Thanksgiving table to protect the table and serve as conversation starters.

Conclusion

Can you picture these one-of-a-kind adornments on your Thanksgiving table? Me, too! Enjoy creating these masterpieces with your grandbabies – and, as always, let’s talk again soon. 🙂
