10 Ways to Spend a Fun and Rewarding Afternoon at the Nursing Home with Your Grandkids

When my kids were little, I used to take them to a local nursing home to walk around, say hi, and visit with the residents. The folks we saw LOVED this (especially when my daughter would put on a show playing her small harp while singing), and I loved that my kids were getting to interact with a different generation while giving back to the community.

Now my daughter is the mom, and she and I have taken her kids (my grands!) to do several things with local nursing home residents, making for a fun afternoon outing. If you are looking for a rewarding activity to do with your grandkids, consider one (or all) of these ten things you can do at your local nursing home:

1. Visit and Share Stories

Putting a smile on Grandma's face

There’s nothing quite like the warmth of a friendly face, especially for those who don’t often get visitors. Encourage your grandchildren to spend some time chatting with the residents, sharing stories from their day, asking about the resident’s own childhood experiences, or maybe even finding a shared hobby or interest. This interaction will not only brighten the day of the resident but also instill a sense of empathy and respect for elders in your grandchild.

2. Deliver Handmade Valentine’s Day Cards

Grandkids can express their love and care by creating handmade Valentine’s Day cards. It’s a fun activity for them and a sweet surprise for the nursing home residents that will surely bring a smile to their faces.

3. Sing Christmas Carols

When the holiday season rolls around, bring the magic of Christmas to the nursing home by singing carols with your grandkids. The sound of children’s voices singing classics like “Jingle Bells” or “Silent Night” can evoke fond memories and fill the atmosphere with holiday cheer!

4. Perform a Skit or Play

Nudge your little ones’ creative side by organizing a small play or skit, whether it be based on a popular fairy tale or maybe even an amusing incident from their own lives. The joy and laughter such performances can bring to the residents will be heartwarming to witness.

5. Arrange a Show and Tell

A show-and-tell session is another excellent idea! Your grandkids can bring their favorite toys, school projects, or even pets (if allowed) and take turns presenting them to the residents. (Trust me: Both the kids and the residents will LOVE it.)

6. Create Art Together

Craft activities such as painting, making collages, or creating simple jewelry can be both therapeutic and enjoyable. Encourage your grandkids to collaborate with the residents to create beautiful art pieces, as these shared experiences can lead to strong bonds between your grandkids and the residents.

7. Read a Book Aloud

Reading a book aloud is a lovely activity that can transport the listeners to a different world. Choose books that are suitable for all ages, and maybe even let the residents pick the next book. This can be a peaceful and comforting way to spend the afternoon.

8. Play Classic Board Games

Board games never go out of style. Games like chess, checkers, Scrabble, or even card games can be a great way to engage the residents. Besides, it’s a fantastic opportunity for the grandkids to learn some strategic moves from their experienced opponents!

9. Garden Together

If the nursing home has a garden, your grandchildren could assist the residents with some light gardening. Planting seeds, watering plants, or even just enjoying the outdoors together can be a rejuvenating experience for everyone involved.

10. Celebrate Birthdays

Celebrating residents’ birthdays can make them feel loved and remembered. Your grandchildren could help bake a cake, make birthday cards, or even decorate the celebration area.

Conclusion

Remember, your grandkids’ visit to the nursing home is a win-win for everyone. The residents get a change of pace and some youthful energy while your grandchildren learn valuable lessons about respect, empathy, and the joy of giving. (As an aside, be sure to contact the nursing home in advance to make sure if/when visitors are permitted!)
