Your Grandkids Will Love These 10 Simple and Fun Independence Day Crafts

If you live in the States like me, you know that Independence Day – with its fireworks, grilling, and fun with family and friends – is upon us. If you have been here awhile, you also know that I like to do crafts and activities that correlate with events and holidays, and the 4th of July is no exception!

Are your grandkids going to be around on or around the 4th? Consider doing one (or all) of these 10 festive Independence Day crafts with them!

1. Patriotic Paper Plate Wind Spinners

Paper plates

Materials:

  • Red, white, and blue construction paper
  • Paper plates
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • String
  • Hole punch

Instructions:

  1. Cut the paper plates into a spiral shape, starting from the outside and working your way to the center.
  2. Cut out various shapes from the construction paper, such as stars and stripes.
  3. Glue the shapes onto the spiral paper plate.
  4. Punch a hole at the center of the plate, attach the string, and your wind spinner is ready to hang!

2. Star-Spangled Slime

Materials:

  • Clear glue
  • Liquid starch
  • Red, white, and blue glitter
  • Star-shaped confetti

Instructions:

  1. Pour the clear glue into a bowl.
  2. Add your glitter and star confetti and mix.
  3. Slowly add the liquid starch while continuously stirring until the mixture becomes the consistency of slime.
  4. Knead the slime with your hands and let it sit for a few minutes before playing with it.

3. Uncle Sam’s Hat

Materials:

  • Red, white, and blue construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Tape

Instructions:

  1. Cut out a circle from the blue construction paper for the brim of the hat.
  2. Roll a piece of red paper into a cylinder and tape it to the circle to form the top of the hat.
  3. Cut out white stripes and a blue square for stars. Glue these onto the red cylinder to finish Uncle Sam’s hat.

4. Firework Salt Painting

Materials:

  • Black construction paper
  • White Elmer’s glue
  • Salt
  • Watercolor paint
  • Paintbrush

Instructions:

  1. Draw fireworks with the glue on the black construction paper.
  2. Immediately sprinkle salt all over the glue. Let it dry.
  3. Dip your paintbrush in watercolor paint and lightly touch the salt. Watch as the colors spread and create a firework effect!

5. American Flag Popsicle Stick Craft

Materials:

  • Popsicle sticks
  • Red, white, and blue paint
  • White construction paper
  • Glue

Instructions:

  1. Paint several popsicle sticks red and white for the stripes.
  2. Paint a few popsicle sticks blue for the star field, then glue white paper stars onto them.
  3. Line up and glue the popsicle sticks to create an American flag.

6. DIY Fourth of July Necklaces

Materials:

  • Red, white, and blue beads
  • String
  • Scissors

Instructions:

  1. Cut the string to the desired length of the necklace.
  2. Let the kids thread the beads onto the string in a pattern or randomly.
  3. Tie the ends of the string together to finish the necklace.

7. Patriotic Tissue Paper Lantern

Materials:

  • Balloon
  • Red, white, and blue tissue paper
  • Glue
  • LED tea light

Instructions:

  1. Inflate the balloon to the desired size of the lantern.
  2. Tear up the tissue paper into pieces.
  3. Glue the tissue paper pieces all over the balloon. Let it dry completely.
  4. Pop the balloon and remove it.
  5. Place the LED tea light inside the lantern, and you have a festive Fourth of July lantern.

8. Patriotic Tie-Dye T-shirts

Materials:

  • White T-shirts
  • Red and blue fabric dye
  • Rubber bands
  • Plastic squeeze bottles
  • Plastic bags
  • Plastic gloves

Instructions:

  1. Twist or fold the t-shirt and secure with rubber bands in the desired tie-dye pattern.
  2. Prepare the dye in the squeeze bottles according to the instructions on the dye packaging.
  3. Wearing the plastic gloves, apply the dye to the t-shirt.
  4. Once the dye is applied, place the t-shirt in a plastic bag and let it sit for 6-8 hours or overnight.
  5. Rinse the shirt until the water runs clear, then remove the rubber bands.
  6. Wash and dry the shirt separately before wearing.

Materials:

  • Sugar cookies
  • Red, white, and blue icing
  • Star-shaped cookie cutter
  • Sprinkles

Instructions:

  1. Cut out and bake sugar cookies using the star-shaped cookie cutter. Let them cool.
  2. Apply the icing to the cookies in creative, patriotic designs.
  3. Add sprinkles for an extra festive touch.

10. Red, White, and Blue Sand Art

  • Red, white, and blue colored sand
  • Clear plastic or glass containers
  • Small funnel

Instructions:

  1. Using the funnel, pour a layer of colored sand into the container.
  2. Repeat with the other colors, layering them until you reach the top of the container.
  3. Close the container, and you have a colorful, patriotic sand art display!
