Is there anything more fun and iconic than decorating gingerbread houses during the holidays? The sweet smells and almost melodic-sounding giggles are a thing of Grandma’s dreams, and I look forward to doing it with my grandkids every year!

This holiday season, why don’t we up the ante (so to speak) by making the decorating a little more interesting? That’s right – we will turn this classic tradition into a friendly competition! Here is how:

Supplies:

  • Gingerbread house kits
  • Icing
  • Icing bags and tips
  • Assorted candies for decorating
  • Sprinkles and edible glitter
  • Festive decorations
  • Disposable tablecloths
  • Name tags
  • Judging criteria sheet and prizes

1. Set up your workspace

Lay the disposable tablecloths on a large table and organize the decorating supplies, ensuring each child has enough space to work.

2. Assemble the houses

If you’re using a kit, follow the instructions to assemble the house using the royal icing. (Allow some time for the icing to harden before decorating.)

3. Explain the rules

Before starting, explain your rules for the competition, such as time limits or specific categories for judging.

4. Decorate!

Let each grandchild decorate their gingerbread house. They can use the icing to adhere candies and decorations to the house. Let their imaginations run wild with this one!

5. Judging and prizes

Once everyone is done, you can either judge the houses based on the categories you’ve set or simply celebrate each unique creation. Hand out the prizes if you have them. (If you don’t, don’t sweat it!)

6. Photo time

Take photos of each grandchild with their gingerbread house – This is a wonderful way to preserve the memory.

7. Cleanup time

Once the competition is over, use the disposable tablecloths to wrap up any mess and dispose of them.

Conclusion

Aren’t holiday activities with your grandkids so darn fun? I love this festive time of year, so stay tuned for even more ideas for things you and your grands can do.
