Do you remember when you were a kid and ordering a pizza was a huge treat? Today, ordering pizza (and having it delivered) is not quite the treat it used to be, but enjoying a homemade pizza, ironically, is!
While homemade everything was once the norm, it is now more of a novelty, especially regarding pizza! Don’t get me wrong – my grandkids and I both love delivery and frozen pizza, but there is nothing quite like a homemade pie with made-from-scratch dough and fresh ingredients.
That said, we invite you to make your own homemade pies via this fun and tasty DIY pizza bar:
1. Prepare the pizza dough
Sure, you can grab pre-made pizza dough from the store, but wouldn’t it be more fun (and educational!) to make it from scratch with the grandkids? Believe it or not, it’s not that difficult! You can find a simple recipe online or use one that’s been passed down in your family. Have the kids measure out the ingredients and assist with the mixing process for an even more enjoyable – and memorable – experience.
2. Gather a variety of toppings
The toppings bar is where the fun really begins. You can offer a variety of classic toppings, along with some adventurous ones to pique their interest. Here are some ideas:
- Basics: Marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, parmesan cheese
- Proteins: Pepperoni, Italian sausage, grilled chicken, ham
- Veggies: Bell peppers, mushrooms, olives, tomatoes, spinach, onions
- Extras: Pineapple chunks, fresh basil, garlic, jalapenos, capers
Have you ever made a dessert pizza? That’s another fun option, too!
3. Set up your pizza bar
Clear a space in your kitchen to set up the pizza bar. Put the dough, sauce, cheese, and toppings in separate bowls, and lay them out in the order they’ll be used. Don’t forget to preheat your oven as directed in your pizza dough recipe!
4. Craft your perfect pie
Give each of your grandkids a piece of dough and let them roll it out. (Tip: Be sure to flour your surface to prevent sticking!) They can shape their pizzas however they like—circles, squares, or maybe even a heart! Then, let them add their sauce, cheese, and desired toppings.
5. Bake and enjoy!
Once the pizzas are assembled, they’re ready to be baked. Needless to say, you, Grandma, should handle the oven part to keep the kids safe. While the pizzas are baking, clean up the pizza bar and set the table. When the pizzas are done, let them cool for a few minutes, and then it’s time to enjoy!
