The Candle That Burned Too Bright

There was a man named Theo who was proud of how much he could handle. His days were full and his nights even fuller. He answered messages quickly, said yes often, and believed rest was something he could schedule later.

“I’ll slow down after this week,” he told himself.
Then the next week came.
And the next.

Theo was dependable. Productive. Always moving. On the outside, he looked successful. On the inside, he felt like a candle burning at both ends, bright, but thinning.

One evening, after another long day, Theo sat down to finish one last task. His hands hovered over the keyboard… and stopped. His mind felt foggy. Simple decisions felt heavy. The energy that once came easily was gone.

He leaned back and closed his eyes.

That’s when he remembered something his grandmother once said while trimming a candle wick:
“If you don’t tend the flame, it doesn’t burn longer, it burns out.”

Theo had ignored that wisdom for years.

The next day, he did something that felt uncomfortable at first, he stopped. Not forever. Just enough.

He took a walk without a destination. He left his phone behind. He sat quietly and did nothing productive at all. No fixing. No planning. Just breathing.

At first, guilt crept in.
You should be doing more, it whispered.

But then something else arrived, clarity.

Theo realized that rest wasn’t stealing time from his life. It was returning it. The creativity, patience, and focus he thought he had lost weren’t gone, they were simply exhausted.

From then on, Theo treated rest as essential, not optional. He learned to pause before burnout forced him to stop. He protected small pockets of calm the way he protected deadlines.

Because slowing down didn’t make him weaker,
it made him sustainable.

And sometimes, the most productive thing you can do…
is rest before the flame goes out. 🕯️
